A Treatise on White Magic or The Way of the Disciple
Published in Paperback by Lucis Publishing Company (June, 1998)
Author: Alice A. Bailey
Average review score:

A Practical But Esoteric Spiritual Guide
A Treatise On White Magic by Alice Bailey is a very special book written for those spiritual seekers who have found the spiritual path within themselves and who require specific and general guidance in moving forward. The book is divided into major sections, where each can be seen to deal with a major aspect and stage upon this path. There are sections that deal with the physical, emotional and mental aspects of ourselves and the books hints at how these aspects are and can be spiritualised.

A Treatise on White Magic, like so many of A.A.B's books, is not intended to be informational. On the whole, they are intended to be inspirational. By that I mean that the reader's intuition and spiritual perception is awakened through studying the book's contents.

This book cannot be rated too highly and will be appreciated by those who have a deep interest in all things spiritual, but not necessarily religious, and by those who can appreciate the spiritual and esoteric aspect of everyday life.

A Treatise on White Magic
In this book, the 15 Rules of White Magic are explained in detail, each relating to a specific plane, each demanding a definite state of mind in order to obtain sought after results. For instance, Rule I requires Recollection leading the way to Concentration. Rule II demands Response leading to Interaction between the Higher and Lower Self. Rule III is Radiation, which is a Sounding forth, etc. Rules I through VI relate to the Mental Plane, Rules VII through XI to the Astral Plane. Rules XII through XV to the Physical Plane. The whole of man is taken into consideration; the whole of man is at work with White Magic.

The graded and controlled concretion of Ideas
This book is an enlargement on the "15 Rules of White Magic" as given by the author in "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire". The "15 Rules" apply to bringing down to the physical, the Divine Idea which is its underlying cause. Specifically, the rules examine the various phases this Idea goes through in order to be "clothed in matter", at which time it becomes manifest on the physical plane. The "magician" is the soul or Higher Self, thereby making the new physical object of divine origin. Obviously, not everyone can perform White Magic of this kind as it requires that continuity of consciousness possessed by an initiate of a certain grade. Furthermore, it is clear that if this information were easy to know, inherent dangers might befall the "magician". So, much of this book also centres on how to "become a Disciple and Initiate", and the reader has to "read between the lines" to truly learn. Hence, it is a book one returns to time and again over many years.

Edge of the Cave
Published in Hardcover by 1stBooks Library (June, 2001)
Authors: Blake Bailey and Stephen Krebbs
Average review score:

A most absorbing and rewarding read
Blake Bailey's Edge Of The Cave is the enticing story of an ordinary lawyer who becomes drawn into the deep spiritual questions, who seeks wisdom from a variety of religions and philosophies - and finds so much of it that he winds up committed to the county psychiatric hospital. Witty, thoughtful, filled with subtle insights and a candidly askew look at life, Edge of the Cave is a most absorbing and rewarding read.

This book made me think, hard.
If you could imagine an argument that would decide the fate of the world and it's citizens, this is the book. The surrealistic imagery that allows one man to debate the fate of nations and their political representatives. Who is responsible for the "crime" of war? Is it a crime? How would you like to be the one responsible for proving it one way or the other. Bring your imagination, this book is an enthralling ride.

Fascinating book
Although I'm relatively new to the area of philosophy, I found this book to be very understandable yet compelling. While many higher ideas are discussed by the characters, it's still written in such a way that a philosophical novice such as myself can grasp the concepts and thoroughly enjoy the book. It stretched my mind and challenged some of my preconceived ideas. The author has a real talent for presenting a likable, engaging character and yet presenting complex material at the same time.

The Speed Trap : How to Avoid the Frenzy of the Fast Lane

Author: Joseph Bailey

Real Life Examples and a Quick Read, too!
One of the biggest problems in many relationships is that there simply isn`t enough time to be together. School interferes, work interferes, the chores of real life interfere. It may seem like a lot of that is out of your control, but in reality there may be ways to better manage your time, and get more enjoyment out of the time you do have together. This book is a quick read, has a lot of real-world examples, and in the end gives suggestions that are easy to implement and make a ton of sense. I highly recommend it!

This book will help you MAKE time
Every once in awhile, you find a book that makes time stand still. One that you can't wait to get to the end but are so sad when you reach it! This book provides the opportunity to shift your personal paradigm and change your experience of each moment, event. I put the principles to work immediately, jumped into one of my typically hectic days and had such a different experience. Invest the time and the few dollars, it is definately worthwhile. Give it to others in your world who are frantic and trying to run faster to catch up..... Kudos & thank you, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Carlson

OUTSTANDING!
This little book has more common sense wisdom in it than any other book on the market. It is the kind of book you will want to refer to again and again whenever you feel like you're spinning out of control. This book makes you see the big picture, while brilliantly explaining how your thoughts create your reality through interesting stories and examples.A MUST READ

The Chessboard of War: Sherman and Hood in the Autumn Campaigns of 1864 (Great Campaigns of the Civil War)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (June, 2000)
Author: Anne J. Bailey
Average review score:

A small masterpiece
A gem -- no other word for it. In more than six decades of Civil War "buffdom," I've never seen a clearer, more complete, more reader-friendly book on any segment of that war. There is not an unnecessary word in it, but it leaves nothing unsaid. Truly a small masterpiece.

A Wonderful Read
Bailey's Chessboard of War is the best accounting I have read of Sherman and Hood. The book is balanced, well written and objective. Its inclusion of the participation of black soldiers and the Sherman's slave camp followers was particularly welcomed. Although Bailey is from Cleburne TX and is an admirer of Patrick Cleburne she also gives George Thomas his due. Rarely is that done. An impressive piece of work.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Sherman and Hood
...but were afraid to ask. Plus: succinctly presented politics of war -- And a cat and mouse Civil War story that draws one in with thrills and chills -- All the more so, because it's true.

The New Fit or Fat
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (June, 1991)
Author: Covert Bailey
Average review score:

THE BIBLE OF FAT LOSS!!
No other book describes what it takes to lose fat better than this one.Covert is brilliant at describing how the metabolism works in such a way that anyone can understand it.I refer to it often when my motivation slips because this book motivates as well as educates. It is pure common sense which is something that is lacking in today's society. This book is all you need.

Simple, easy to understand, informative, a great source
It was an excellent source of basic information for the newcomer to the fitness world. The chapters were easy to understand but were in depth enough get the point across. An excellent source for someone who wants to get in shape. However, if you want a more scientific, in depth discussion, this may be a bit too simple.

great book - changed my life
I am in my early thirties and had steadily gained weight for about three years at the rate of 4 or five pounds a year. The result was that last year I found myself about 15 pounds over my ideal 120lbs. I found this book logical and inspirational as it deals with lifestyle and eating habits rather than dieting. Over the course of about 9 months I lost all my excess weight without having to resort to diets. I am fitter and healthier and attribute this to the change in mindset I got from this easy to read book.

The Old Farmers Almanac 2000
Published in Paperback by Yankee Pub (September, 1999)
Authors: Judson D. Hale and Robert Bailey Thomas
Average review score:

PRACTICAL HELP
This is the first time I have ever purchased a Farmers almanac, and now I wonder how I ever gardened without one! It is set up in an easy to read format, and is small enought to carry around!

An old standard!
Being America's oldest published periodical, this fact alone assures a potential examiner or reader that it is indeed a worthwhile study. This funny and odd (perhaps one say this, I thought that odd was a good pointer, however, others might disagree over this) book has been read and studied for almost 300 years and gives weather indications for the following year. The supplemental guide to watching the weather is a funny little thing that teaches one how and what to look for whilst one is outside observing the shifting weather patterns. Highly Recommended.

It is very up to date - very precise.
This book tells it all like it is. It leaves nothing out. If you have problems figuring out what the symbols mean, there is a directory that helps you. I recommend the books to friends & family every year - which I perchase every year myself.

Brave Journeys
Published in Paperback by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Trd Pap) (01 May, 2001)
Authors: David Mixner and Dennis Bailey
Average review score:

Thoughtful, Well Done, and Needed
Without hyperbole or overstatement, Mixner and Bailey have interwoven different stories about different heroes in the lesbian and gay community to create a cohesive and telling story about our lives and times. This civil rights battle is, unfortunately, still being fought, and books like this will help speed an eventual victory.

Riveting!
This book is an excellent read! I was inspired and awed by thebravery documented in these pages. Mixner, w/ Mr. Baily, has written an important historical account, not just of the individual lives portrayed, but of the entire quest for recognition and equality by the gay & lesbian community. Our lives have been immeasurably improved by the courage and action of brave people like Elaine Noble, Del Martin, Phyllis Lyons and Tracy Thorne (and of course, Mr. Mixner). After reading this book, I feel an intense sense of gratitude to each and every one of them.

Inspiring Beyond Words
I couldn't put it down. Mixner, with Bailey, has done it again. A non-fiction read that is more exciting than fiction. At the same time celebrating the human potential for "what one man (or woman) can do".. I feel a better person for having read it. Going to tell all my friends and family. I've already bought three copies for gifts..

God, Dr. Buzzard and the Bolito Man: A Saltwater Geechee Talks About Life on Sapelo Island
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (15 August, 2000)
Authors: Christena Bledsoe and Cornelia Walker Bailey
Average review score:

Fascinating
The Golden Isles of Georgia are mysterious and fascinating. The Spanish moss, tabby walls, the "shout" of the Sea Island Singers, and cloudy past reach out to visitors today. The author of this book, a salt-water Geechee, grew up on Sapelo. Her story is wonderfully interesting. The beliefs of the slaves' descendants were so little changed for so many years. Traditions born in western Africa are still hanging on to life even today on Sapelo. I hope the government, even in the name of saving the environment, never succeeds in taking the land away from the Geechee families who lived such true lives there. Their life deserves to continue as long as their faith lives.

A magical book to read and re-read.
Part memoir, part cultural history, part plea on behalf of a fragile culture, God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man is as affecting as the best magic realism. You do not simply read it, you savor it and absorb it into your very soul.

In the book, Cornelia Bailey, resident griot of Sapelo Island off the Georgia coast, spins the story of her growing up in that place and in a time when lives were governed equally by religion, magic, and chance. She admits us deep into the culture of her proud people and introduces us to folkways strong enough to have survived the Middle Passage and the centuries since. So it is with infinite sadness we learn that the forces of progress are rendering these same folkways as fragile as a paper-thin fig shell that washes onto the beach.

It goes without saying that God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man will appeal to cultural historians, anthropologists, naturalists, and environmentalists. The book's strongest appeal, however, will be to lovers of lyrical prose -- and to anyone who delights in the sheer magic of the way words fall on the ear and follow one another on a page.

This is a special book, one that should find a home on every reader's short shelf of well-thumbed volumes that are read and referenced time and again.

A book that captures your heart.
God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man transports the reader to the Georgia sea islands. You swear you can smell the marsh, hear the sea birds cry and taste the sweet potatoes. The writing is so pure and the people so true that you come away afraid of Mama Lizzie, furious at Bukra and proud of Grandma when she faces down the deacons. The issues the book tackles are important - ownership of the land, the insidious effects of slavery, the origins of sea island culture in Africa - but it is also a book that captures your heart. A must for anyone who is interested in people. Highly recommended.

The Light of the Soul, Its Science and Effects: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali with Commentary by Alice A. Bailey
Published in Paperback by Lucis Publishing Company (April, 1998)
Author: Alice A. Bailey
Average review score:

The Light of the Soul
This book is a paraphrasing of the "Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali," as understood by Alice Bailey. The Sutras are the basis of Raja Yoga, which is the Science of the Soul, hence the title, "The Light of the Soul." The 51 Sutras are explained in Book I. Book II consists of a description of the steps that lead to Union, i.e., the means of attaining that state which has been traditionally called the "mystical union" in Christian faiths. The results of this Union are shared in Book III by explaining another 55 Sutras. The last Book, # IV, is by far the most difficult to understand since it treats of ILLUMINATION, a state unattainable by man. The 4 Books are bound into one: "The Light of the Soul."

The Science of the Path
The Light of the Soul is a very able translation and commentary on the teachings of one of the greatest spiritual teachers the world has seen - Patanjali. The book will be of vital interest to those who have found the reality of the spiritual path within themselves.

The Light of the Soul consists of 4 books of sutras, each book being a continuation of the teaching of the last book. The teaching covers the greater part of that path, starting from when we first recognise its existence. The entire approach of the sutras is a mental and deeply spiritual one. It outlines the practical, though inner, steps that the spiritual seeker must take in order to move from one point to the next. Much of the text is about how to spiritualise the mind (and our entire self using the mind correctly) and prepare ourselves for this spiritual transformation.

That all this is in abbreviated form in one book is a test for those who would study it, as it takes a great sense of proportion, discipline and gentle patience to tread the path with care and a sense of direction and purpose at each point. It is too easy (and fruitless) to flit here to there, grasping some interesting ideas, and then moving on again.

The sutras are to be taken as objects for our deepest contemplation and by no means should the reader limit themselves to the commentary given. The commentary is there as a guide only, for those who find it helpful.

The Light of the Soul is an explanation of how to make this divine light a living, practical reality in our lives. No spiritual person, truly interested in treading the spiritual path, should be without this book.

An esoteric interpretation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
A thorough and unique interpretation of Patanjali. This is a reference work that should be studied. Also, some degree of understanding of esotericism is assumed. Possibly it should be supplemented with an alternative, like Iyengar's. Personally, I find it one of the most practical treatises on meditation.
